Artist Statement:
My piece is meant to convey the feeling of being trapped contrasted with tools of escape. I frequently feel trapped in how others perceive me and wanted this piece to communicate that feeling. The box itself is cage to communicate this but also incorporates swirling and spiral shapes to show how easy it is to get wrapped up and lost in other peoples view of you. Each of the objects inside is meant to be an object to represent escape. The first object that combines a key with feathers as the notches. Both keys and feathers represent freedom and by combining them I wanted to convey unconventional thinking as as necessary for obtaining that freedom.
Sketches & Notes:
The movie I chose was Penelope (2006). The movie was heavily inspired fairy tales and extremely whimsical and I wanted to be able to capture that despite the theme of being trapped, which draws to mind harsh shapes and materials. I compromised keeping the harshness with the wire material and unfinished barbs on the cage and incorporating the whimsicality through the overall shape and patterns on the panels.
